Let’s go to sleep in Paris, and wake up in Tokyo. What could be a better style connection than Paris and Tokyo? Rei Kawakubo, creator of Dover Street Market, as well as the transcendent Comme Des Garcons serves as the heart and soul of this global fashion connection, the French-named, Japanese-orignated Comme des Garçons(CDG), translated as “Like Boys” in French, and inspired by lyrics to a 1962 French pop song.
Her lines of fashion include 8(!) different lines: Comme des Garçons SHIRT, Junya Watanabe, Comme des Garçons HOMME, HOMME Plus, HOMME Deus, Comme des Garçons Parfum, and of primary focus, Comme des Garçons PLAY.
Comme des Garçons PLAY is a youthful fashion label under the genius CDG umbrella that emphasizes one of those global symbols, the transcendent, eyed heart designed by the brilliant Polish artist Filip Pagowski. Wearing the CDG heart that stares back at jealous onlookers, you are telling the world around that you are part of the CDG family.
Pagowski’s CDG Play logo raised the fashion status of the classic Converse Chuck Taylor, and at The Custom Movement, we have a curated list of some of the best, most オシャレ (oshare), fashion-forward sneakers from our ever-talented artists.
One of the cleanest sneakers on this list, OT customs hits a home run by putting just the right amount of CDG flair. Comme Des Garcons PLAY’s label is about that subtle mix of style and class, and the color blocking of black and white Stan Smith sneakers with a perfectly painted and placed CDG logo checks all the right boxes.
“All about Standing Out” is the tagline of Irish-based OT customs. With the enlarged CDG Play heart adorning the white leather uppers of these Adidas black and white Stan Smiths, you can bet that you will, with class, in these.
Regular readers will probably not be surprised by the inclusion of at least one Air Force One on the list. After all, the shoe serves as one of the preferred options as a customizer’s canvas. But what I love about these CDG x Air Force 1s over similar design is that Oregon-based JME Custom incorporated a hit of checkerboard design above the Nike Swoosh.
That, and the hit of red on the Nike Air logo adorning the heel tab, a deliciously subtle addition. With a properly subtle, yet colorful mix of colors, JME combines the grandfather of basketball shoes with the youthful, future-facing styles of CDG into something wholly new.
While they are currently only available in a few sizes with JME customs, if you are interested, throw them a message!
Alternatively, TA Customs offers a similar checkerboard design in any size.
TA Customs needs no introduction as a customizer- this Netherlands-based customizer has a huge catalog of awesome custom shoes, as well as a dedicated following on Instagram. We’ve heard before that we haven’t shown enough love for Vans shoes, and so I made it a point to include some Vans here from this high-flying customizer.
The choice canvas- the Sk8-Hi, are a legendary, rugged, and reliable shoe favored by many skaters (okay, obviously). With their strong toe caps and padded collars, these sneakers are ready to be beat up, worn, and mashed around. With a dedicated family of CDG Play hearts painted onto the canvas uppers, these custom sneakers shout out your dedication to the cute and cool.
Additionally, with the quality work done by TA customs, you can be sure that your love of CDG can follow you through the good days and bad- rain, shine, or snow.
